When homeowners plan and budget for an exterior painting project, they’re usually trying to answer one question, “What process should I expect for the price I’m paying?”
And honestly, that’s fair. It’s a fairly large investment for your home which is typically one of your largest assets.
A proper exterior paint job is not just spraying color on siding. It’s a system.
If any step is skipped or rushed, the result fails early and oh boy will you be able to tell!
Cue the peeling, fading, moisture issues, and stark visible paint streaky lines.
Think of your exterior painting as a protective coating on your home. From insects, pests, moisture, mold, elements, insulation, etc. Painting the outside of your home can single handedly extend the lifespan of your siding, improve energy, efficiency, increase property value, protect against elements, and the most obvious reason…upgrade instant curb appeal.
At Wall to Wall Painting, we like to follow a consistent 5 step process that’s designed for harsh unpredictable Omaha weather, not just textbook painting. Here’s exactly how it should be done and what we’ve found works best so you know why to expect.
Step 1: Inspection & Surface Evaluation
Every project starts with a full thorough walkthrough.
Here’s what we’re looking for:
- Peeling or failing paint
- Rotten or soft wood
- Cracked caulking or open seams
- Moisture-prone areas
- Previous coating type (oil vs latex)
This step matters more than most people realize. Freeze & thaw cycles here in the Midwest can trap moisture behind siding with the expansion and contraction.
If the inspection step is skipped you’re painting over problems instead of solving them and can be wasting time and money.
Pro Tip:
If your painting contractor doesn’t talk about moisture with you, they’re not on the right track.
Step 2: Cleaning & Surface Preparation
Proper prep includes:
- Pressure washing (or soft wash depending on surface)
- Removing dirt, chalking (siding buildup), and mildew
- Scraping all loose, peeling, and failing paint
- Sanding rough edges for smooth transitions
Clean surfaces allow paint to chemically and mechanically bond correctly. Dirty or chalky siding leads to premature failure. Paint can’t stick to that.
For deck or wood surfaces, this may also include cleaners like Revive or similar prep products.
Keep in mind: PREP IS NOT OPTIONAL! It’s the foundation of the entire project.
Step 3: Repairs, Caulking & Sealing
Before any paint goes on, the surface needs to be sealed and structurally sound.
This step is going to include:
- Replacing rotted trim or siding sections
- Filling cracks and gaps
- Caulking windows, doors, and joints
- Sealing areas that could potentially be penetrated via water intrusion
This is where you protect the home, not just improve appearance.
A good exterior paint job should also act as a weather barrier, especially in this crazy Midwest weather!
Step 4: Priming
Primer is not always required, but when it is, it’s critical.
We use primer when:
- Bare wood is exposed
- There are stains bleeding through
- The previous coating is failing
- We’re making a significant color change
Products like bonding primers or oil based stain blockers are used depending on the situation.
Skipping primer when it’s obviously needed leads to peeling, uneven color, and reduces your paints lifespan.
Step 5: Professional Paint Application
Now comes the part most people think is the whole job.
We typically apply:
- 1-2 full coats depending on coverage
- Spray and back roll for proper adhesion (pay attention to details you will notice cheaper painting contractors out there may skip this step!) This creates an even consistent finish across all surfaces.
We also pay attention to:
- Temperature ranges
- Humidity levels
- Dry times between coats (extremely important!)
- Protection of various items surround the job site
In Omaha’s wildly changing seasonal weather, using the correct product matters. For example, coatings like Sherwin Williams Latitude are designed for wider temperature swings, which helps extend your paints longevity.
Why This Process Matters
A lot of companies will advertise exterior painting, but not all follow a structured system.
When steps are skipped:
- Paint fails in 1–3 years instead of 7–10 which is how long a standard exterior painting should last
- You’ll see peeling, bubbling, or cracking
- Moisture damage gets WORSE underneath unfortunately
A proper exterior painting process protects your home, not just improves how it looks.
How Long Does the Exterior Painting Process Take?
Obviously it’s weather dependent in Nebraska but for most homes you’re looking at:
- Small homes: 2–3 days
- Average homes: 3–5 days
- Larger or more detailed homes: 5–7 days
Prep and repairs often take the most time but remember that’s a good thing! Faster does not equal better when it comes to this particular type of painting.
What Homeowners Should Look For
Before hiring a contractor, ask:
- What does your prep process include?
- Do you prime when necessary?
- How do you handle repairs and caulking?
- What products are you using and why?
If the answers are vague, that’s a huge red flag. You’re investing a lot of money into this service so hiring the right professional for the job is of importance.
